The Social Scoop ⤵️
This news was shared by six current and former employees of TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance
In addition to the TikTok algorithm deciding what goes viral, Forbes reviewed internal documents that show staff at TikTok and ByteDance also “secretly hand-pick specific videos and supercharge their distribution, using a practice internally known as “heating”.
Heating is where videos are boosted to achieve a certain number of video views.
Videos on the FYP may not be there because TikTok thinks you’ll like them, but more so a particular brand or creator can get more views. It’s impossible to tell which is which.
Is this biased? Or does this feel a little icky to y’all?
📸 Adam Mosseri Announces Photo Focus for 2023
In a Q&A series on Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram’s, Stories, he said that the platform went too hard on pushing videos.
“I think we were overfocused on video in 2022 and pushed ranking too far, and basically showed too many videos and not enough photos. We’ve since balanced, so things like how often someone likes photos versus videos, and how often someone comments on photos versus videos, are roughly equal, which is a good sign that things are balanced.”
