How to Make a Living as a Traveling Content Creator with Payton Cavin

There’s usually a point in every creator’s career where you ask yourself: How can I become a travel creator? How can I land incredible deals with some of the most beautiful places on earth?

As we know, from the outside, the influencer industry is glamorous: free trips, complimentary meals, and gifted experiences, but being a travel creator requires intense work.

This week, we’re here with Payton Cavin, a colorful travel creator based in Texas who has been a successful travel creator for the last two years.

This week, Payton is answering all of our questions about being a travel creator. How we can start getting travel opportunities? Should we be getting paid to go on these trips? Or is it typically a trade? Who do you contact to land travel gigs? What does the process of working with a travel company even look like from start to finish?

In today’s episode, we discussed:

  • 🤝 Instagram has officially announced a Subscriptions update

    • If you haven’t yet heard, Instagram Subscriptions are coming to the app. They’re a great way for creators to a) have a more consistent income, and b) share exclusive content with their most loyal followers.

    • In this update, Adam Mosseri announced that Subscriptions will include: Subscriber Chats, Reels, Posts, and a Home feed where they can see all of their Subscription content in one place.

  • 📷 Instagram is working on the ability to upload 9:16 photos

    • Back in May, Adam Mosseri spoke about Instagram exploring the ability to upload full-screen 9:16 images, and app developers are finally starting to see it.

    • In preparation, start to ensure that when you’re photographing your content, you’re leaving enough room to crop in a 9:16 framing.

  • 🔎 Instagram Launches Initial Test of New ‘Creator Marketplace’ Influencer Discovery Platform

    • Earlier this week, Instagram launched an initial test of its Creator Marketplace. It will enable advertisers to search for potential creators to partner with on campaigns.

    • Right now, it’s being tested on an invite-only basis with brands and creators, but head to the source link to see what it will look like for brands and how they’ll be able to see our profiles.

  • 📝 Instagram Tests New “Notes” Shelf in IG Direct Messages

    • You’d be able to see this “notes” shelf when you head to your direct messages area.

    • Above your DMs, you’ll see a Twitter-esque area where people can leave “notes” for their connections. These can be status updates or really whatever you wish.

    • Instagram Notes are 60 characters long

  • 💵 Instagram is Testing In-Feed Ads

    • You’d be able to toggle “on” or “off” profile feed ads that would allow viewers to see ads on your profile.

    • It seems that you’d also be able to get a commission of these ads as it was recently renamed to “revenue sharing”
