Youtube Expands 3-Minute Shorts to All Users

  • Now all video uploads under 3 minutes in length with qualify as Shorts

Meta is Getting Rid of Fact-Checks and Switching to Community Notes

  • It’s clear that Meta is looking to better align itself with the incoming Trump administration

  • On 1/7, Zuck announced: “We’ve reached a point where [our moderation systems] make too many mistakes, and it’s too much censorship. The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech. So we’re going to get back to our roots, and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms.”

  • A lot of people are very upset about this because it essentially allows more to internet hate to slide by and may make the app feel unsafe — especially for communities where it already sometimes feels unsafe.

📆 TikTok added post scheduling to their Studio management tool

  • You’ll now have all of the scheduling options within the management app instead of having to use third-party tools.

♻️ YouTube is experimenting with a feature to turn long-form content into Shorts

  • It would let you take engaging segments from long-form videos into segments that could easily be posted as separate 16:9 videos.

  • If you are in the group of users that has access to this test feature, it will show up in YouTube Studio Desktop as ‘create a video highlight.’

📱 Instagram expands Reels length to 3 minutes

  • This goes against the advice they shared earlier this month that Reels should be shorter than 90 seconds for the most reach.

🩷 Instagram will now show your friends which Reels you’ve engaged with

  • On the top right corner of Reels a bubble with your profile picture and a heart or comment icon appears.

  • It won’t show your connections everything you’ve interacted with.

😵‍💫 After half a day, TikTok announced they would be restoring service in the US

  • They claim that Trump provided the necessary clarity to their service providers that there would be no penalties for TikTok continuing in the US.

  • The app is still unavailable in the app store as of now.

😐 Instagram’s new feed and bio layout is a change no one asked for

  • They are rolling out their new 4:5 grid layout to most users and many people are not happy with this change.

  • Mosseri said this change is because most content that is posted is either 4:3 in a photo or 9:16 in a video, so it didn’t make sense to crop it down to a square.

📸 Bluesky is developing its own photo-sharing app called ‘Flashes’

  • It is being built using the same code from the developer’s earlier Bluesky client, Skeets.

  • It will allow users to post up to 4 images at a time and videos up to 1 minute in length.

  • The developer wants people to know that this isn’t meant to be a copy of Instagram, so it won’t have all of the same feature.
